Let’s get the MovieCentral category started with a “blast from the past”…
Currently making another run on Cinemax is 1993′s “Demolition Man”. Sylvester Stallone, Sandra Bullock & Wesley Snipes are the main stars in the film.
The plot’s rather simple. In the mid-1990′s, John Spartan (Stallone)’s a mean & tough cop and Simon Phoenix (Snipes) is the meaniehead sadistic criminal. Spartan is framed for the death of 30 civilians while capturing Phoenix. In this “Brave New World” of the future, really bad people get frozen for their prison sentences. So, they’re both frozen and the movie ends.
No… but we could hope. In 2032, Phoenix is defrosted for his parole hearing (huh?) and surprisingly escapes. He commits the first murders in over 20 years and actually fights police in the future! Oh Noes, What will we do? Well, let’s go to the Kenmore® Deep Freeze and defrost a Spartansicle to catch him. Sandra Bullock plays the 2032 police officer Lenina Huxley (Huxley, get it? “Brave New World”?) who accompanies Spartan in his effort to send Simon Phoenix to jail for not filing income taxes various crimes against humanity.
Things explode, the G-rated society of the future is mocked, and one-liners fly… then the Good People Win. Oh yeah, Denis Leary plays a 2036 version of well… himself. You’ll see.
Overall… it’s a stupid movie, yet somehow fun to watch if you can get around one gratuitous product placement plug. Taco Bell is the only restaurant around. The Horrors!
Overall rating (from 1 to 10 stars): 6 stars. Worth watching if it’s on. Not worth watching if something else is on.
